Things that make us feel safe

This is the inside of our installation and is representative of a safe protected childhood, among these items are genuine relics from group members childhoods, along with things aquired especially for the project. This protective space however is not entirely a positive thing as you cannot lock your child away from all the dangers of the world without it being detrimental their existence. The green ribbon is used worldwide as a symbol of child protection and the petals are partly symbolic of the fragility of childhood today and partly representative of femenine/maternal influence in childhood.

The credit crunch piece was then painted over with acrylic to look like Femme au Pigeon except the child is no longer there, it was then given a white acrylic wash. The result was beautifully textured piece which has ended up on the wall for exhibition week.

The journey of the Credit crunch artists

This is the process of the credit crunch picture,(from bottom to top) to begin with it was minimalistic, using only stains such as coffee, mint sauce, herbs and spices. Soon it became a plethra of different substances including fresh berries, dried pasta and pou-pouri. Wonderful 'aint it.

The Sacrifice

This is the outside of our final installation, horrific isn't it! Its supposed to be. This is representative of all the things we try to protect our children from, it is a vision of innocence lost. Carved into this barbaric looking image is the Phoenician symbol for child sacrifice, because although we do not physically practice this disgraceful act, we continue to sarifice our children and their innocence in different ways.

As part of my personal research into deconstruction theory and the exploration of the psycological factors behind picasso's Femme au Pigeon, I compiled a list of questions to ask my peers (of all ages) which prompted them to really think about the state of the world at the present time. These questions (phrased cafefully so a child may understand) also made them think very carefully about their own lives and how they felt about it, questions like; if you could wish for anything what would it be?, what things are you most afraid of? and what is the most important thing to happen to you lately?. After asking this series of thought provoking questions I asked them; If you had to paint a picture to say how they felt at this time, what would it be?
Jodie is 14 and her answers were very interesting, the thing she hated the most were politicians that spend peoples money (startling relevant to the times) and when asked what peace was she replied "Where people settle in the world for good things". When finally asked what she would paint she answered "A dead frog" but she didn't know why. A wonderful answer that sparked many thoughts in my mind about the subconscious and the many reasons why she could of thought of a dead frog after having to think about the affairs of the world and those of her life. I felt her frog deserved to be an integeral part of our project and the idea of it being part of the final piece was seriously considered.

Children In Need.
Ann made a selection of cakes for us to sell in the Art room today, this was to raise money for child protection.
This has tied in with our project perfectly as now our project is about the protection of children and their youth today.

Laura Carrack - Here I have experimented with an idea of my own that has developed from our group work. This is an outline of the girl in the painting 'femme Au pigeon' by Picasso. I have painted in this shape a variety of fruit, this symbolises purity, good health and life. I decided to use this idea as we have talked and produced work as a group coming from the idea of artists in recession, then on to artists and found objects and also artists that recycle. I developed on these ideas and decided to create my idea through a painting, as we as a group have created a mixed media piece of work using a wide selection of materials which include; a mixture of food and found/recycled objects. This idea turned out as a positive piece of experimental work, but due to later development our ideas turned that piece of work into something completely different.
